Ruthelma Stevens programming alert!

September 25, 2009

The movie that first got me interested in Ruthelma Stevens, The Circus Queen Murder, will be on TCM today at 9:45AM EST! Watch and you'll finally see why I'm so upset that she never "made it" as a star! More on Ruthelma here--

I ended up missing it the last time it was on (last year), so I was happy to finally have the chance again! It wasn't quite as good as the others I saw that morning, but entertaining. I enjoyed the casting. Ruthelma is interesting, as is Greta Nissen!

Last night I watched "The Night Club Lady" (1932) with Adolphe Menjou and Ruthelma Stevens. The show itself is simply a forgotten knock-out gem! Cheaply made, it's one of Harry Cohn's Columbia pre-code cheapies that paid the bills along with all the Jack Holt features. Besides the fantastic performance of Adolphe Menjou, the other part that blew me away was Ruthelma Stevens. I'd never heard of her that I could remember. Then, searching for information about her, I ran into this blog. Just for the record, the film I watched was the first in a series; the second was the film you watched that got you interested in her. She plays 'Kelly', Menjou's police lady assistant to his Police Commissioner. Yeah, a real forgotten gem!
