He's wonderfully subtle.<br />There's an early scene in DARLING when as a TV interviewer,<br />he's examining crowd footage to see whom he should interview.<br />Young Diana (Julie Christie), a total stranger to him, strides<br />forth swinging her bag with her vital independent air. He<br />watches her, his gaze warms and he smiles slightly, and says<br />to his assistant, "That one." We know that it will always be that one for him, all the way to the moment when she leaves forever.<br />He falls forward on the car horn, and it's several seconds<br />before he even realizes the sound is outside his head.
